Lets Go Rams!

It was really nice to see the VCU Rams in the Final Four this year. Yes, I am a Richmond, Virginia native so this was definitely a suprise to me and thousands of other fans. Six years ago the Rams were a nobody team that played in the CAA division were competition wasn't anything like the SEC or Big East Conferences. With the help of there farely new coach Shaka Smart the VCU Rams have come together to make a super squad and put us on the map. I love to see these no name teams step up during tournament time and play their hearts out.

The reason VCU is so dynamic is the way they spread the floor against opponents. Everyone on that team can shoot even the big man. Teams like Kansas who that beat in the elite 8 didn't know how to play against them because nobody knew how to guard them. Kansas was a much bigger team and had more experienced players, but didn't know that VCU had the range that they did. In the Final Four appearance against Butler they could have been more aggressive on the offensive side. Butler definitely watched some film before that game because they weren't letting the Rams get any good wide open outside shots.

I think the game is changing and unknown and smaller schools are getting better. It's nice to see that Duke and North Carolina weren't in the Championship again, or some big school. It's looking good for VCU and I hope they play like this every year. Go Rams and keep up the great work.

Tiger Time

The Masters is the most prestige and elite golf tournament on the PGA Tour. The Master is played this week starting on the 7th and ending on Sunday the 10th. All the greats are going to be at the field such as Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. Phil won the Masters last year with some of the most remarkable shot in Masters history.

Tiger Woods on the other hand is looking for his first win of the year. This year has been a real struggle for Tiger. After all of the things Tigers been through it has to be tough mentally and physically. All the media talk and gossip about him, and his divorce with his wife it has to take a toll on him. I hate how people say hes never going to be good again and that he'll never be the best player in the world. Tiger Woods in my mind is the best player in the world and will be for some time. They have their last practice round today and I wouldn't be suprised if Tiger dosen't come out firing birdies to start out in the lead. This course that these professional golfers are playing on is one of those most challenging courses that they will play all year. The thing about Tiger is that he knows this course better than anyone. The key thing about winning on this course is your short game. You have to get up and down from anywhere your at. If Tiger can get his putter rolling in Augusta than everyone better watch out. He knows those greens like the back of his hand. The field is going to be tough this week with Mickelson looking for a second in a row win. I think this is Tigers time to show everyone that hes not done and hes still the greatest player on tour. Tiger has won this event 4 times and I hope he makes it his 5th green jacket. Go get em Tiger!

Watch Out For The Young Guns

In every sport there is always a superstar that outshines other players. Whether it's shooting forty points in a game or taking a team to the Superbowl these star players make big things happen. Usually we here about the same athletes such as Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant...

or Jeff Gordon. All of this seems to be changing right in front of our eyes. A new breed of talent has stepped into the sport world highlights, and none of them can be stopped. The funny thing about this new talent is they are young and all under the age of 25. It seems to me that these older guys are falling off and this young and new generation of athletes is moving in. Rookie Nascar driver, Trevor Bayne was the youngest person to ever win the Daytona 500. It was only his second race in NASCAR and he beat star race car drivers such as Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Bobby Labonte. The Daytona 500 is known for one of the most challenging races in all of NASCAR.

Blake Griffin, who is a rookie star power foward for the Los Angeles Clippers is taking the NBA by storm. Griffin, 21 years old, has been crushing the competition up against some of the most feared players in the NBA. He's been running circles around guys such as Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, and Paul Pierce. He's an all around dynamic player whose career is only going to get better. He won the NBA Slam-Dunk Competition, was in the All-Star game, and will most likely get rookie of the year.

Rory Mcllroy, 21 years old, is a professional golfer who is on his way to becoming one of the best golfers. He's won the Well's Fargo Championship, and tied for third in the British Open Championship and the PGA Championship. This is a pretty remarkable stat for your first year on tour. He outplayed Tiger Woods and many other veteran golfers in the 2010 and 2011 season to gain his respect. Tiger Woods even put him on the front cover of his own video game, so you know this kid is something specia lto the league.
These guys are making history and these older guys better watch out. You might get a call tomorrow morning saying that you just lost your job. It's time for these older guys to step their game up or take a step down, because these young guns aren't stopping anytime soon.

NCAA Scholarships and Paid College Athletes?

This years NCAA basketball season was an overall really exciting one to remember. There wasn't just one team that dominated the whole year. Every week there was an unranked team upsetting a top ranked team in the nation. For example, when unranked Flordia State beat number one ranked Duke it opened the doors for other teams to make that drive. The thing I love about College sports is everyone is always going hard and putting there best effort into every game. There have been many people such as 2008 presidential candidate Ralph Nader who think that the NCAA should eliminate college athletic scholarships. And others are saying that college athletes should be getting paid and it's not fair. Some former college athletes are saying that why should we have to work so hard and get no money. I think these is complete nonsense. Student athletes in high school bust there tail to get scholarships in college. For instance, I myself worked extremely hard in high school to be the best golfer in my area so I could get a scholarship to play golf in college. I got denied at a lot of major schools that I was looking at in Virginia. The summer after I graduated I got in contact with Flagler College and they told me that they could definitely use me on the Flagler College Golf team. The coach told me at the time that he wanted me to play in a bunch of tournaments that summer to see if I was worthy of a scholarship or not. I practiced every day that summer and ended up getting that scholarship and it was one of the greatest honors in my life.

The reason college athletes play the way they do is because they know how hard they worked to get there and there are millions of guys that would love to be in their shoes. The NCAA said that this would never happen, but other say it will. If there comes a day when college athletes get paid I don't think I could have the same respect that I do now.

A Year Without NFL Football?

What would the world be like without NFL Football? Right when my Washington Redskins are starting to look good for the 2011-2012 season their going to take the sport away for a year due to Labor strikes. I hate how we can actually end such a loved sport just because of money and greed. There are millions of people out there the would play the sport for almost nothing. These athletes are getting paid millions of dollars and their complaining? It's not just the athletes, but it's also the owners. They say if the players salaries grow faster than revenue, the NFL would quickly lose it's financial viability. I grew up playing football in the backyard and looking up to professional athletes. NFL Football isn't just some sport that people watch it's a part of many peoples lives. I mean people live and breathe football and look foward to watching and going to the games each year. I can tell you right now that not having a season is bad for fans, but it's a great thing for other sports. College football will definitely have an increase in it's exposure this year. Major League Baseball's ratings will also increase in great numbers. MLB's early season games will most likely have a bigger fan base in the city's where both football and baseball is played. It's going to be tough not seeing fans wearing there favorite teams and players jerseys on gameday. Life without an NFL adrenaline rush just dosen't seem right.

The lockout hasn't been officially finalized and there is still some hope in opening up this years seasons. Many players are taking up hobbies and trying new things, such as wide reciever Chad Ochocinco who plays for the Cincinnati Bengals. He has been trying out with the Sporting Kansas City of Major League soccer and plans on making the team this summer. I might sound a little harsh in writing this, but I am pointing fingers. We need to wake up and realize how great we have it and be thankful for such a wonderful sport we actually have. Let's take our salary cuts and play some football for crying out loud!
